Titanium Op Gets New Trommel

Tronox’s Namakwa Sands mineral sands operation in Brand se Baai, West Coast Region, South Africa, selected Multotec to replace a trommel at the Primary Concentration Plant East (PCPE). The scope of supply included the trommel screen, screen panels and ancillary equipment. The new trommel was to perfectly replace the old unit and “provide the same level of operational performance and reliability as the old screen had for the past 12 years,” Greta Mantell, technical sales representative, Multotec Manufacturing, said. At PCPE, the trommel screen is used to classify by size and route the oversize to tailings. The undersize is processed as normal.
The PCPE uses sea water for its processes. The Multotec trommel screen is fitted with Spalto polyurethane panels to ensure optimum throughput and wear life. The new trommel is 7.2 m long, has a diameter of 2.5 m and a total mass of 12.5 mt. According to Multotec, it was delivered on time, installed by the mine, commissioned by Multotec, and within two days operated at a rate of 1,000 tons per hour.
